Commercial Truck & Box Truck Insurance

With FMCSA & State Filing Assistance

Commercial truck insurance is designed to protect owner-operators, trucking companies, and box truck operators who depend on their vehicles to run their business. Whether you operate under your own authority, are leased onto a carrier, or manage a fleet, proper insurance and filings are required to stay compliant.

At Insured Me Direct, we specialize in commercial trucking insurance and assist with federal and state filing requirements when applicable.

Who We Insure

We provide insurance solutions for:

  • Owner-operators with their own authority

  • Owner-operators leased onto a motor carrier

  • Trucking companies and fleets

  • Box truck and straight truck operators

  • Businesses hauling owned or non-owned trailers under interchange agreements

Required & Common Commercial Truck Coverages

Auto Liability Coverage (Required)

Auto liability coverage is required for most commercial trucking operations. It covers bodily injury and property damage caused to others while operating a commercial vehicle.

Minimum limits are determined by the FMCSA for interstate carriers and by individual states for intrastate operations.

Physical Damage Coverage

Covers repair or replacement of your truck or box truck due to collision, theft, fire, vandalism, or weather-related losses. Often required by lenders.

Motor Truck Cargo Insurance

Covers loss or damage to freight while being transported. Required limits vary by broker, shipper, and cargo type.

Trailer Interchange Coverage

Required when hauling non-owned trailers under a written interchange agreement. Covers physical damage to trailers in your care, custody, or control.

Non-Trucking Liability (Bobtail)

For owner-operators leased onto a carrier, this covers the truck when not under dispatch.

General Liability Coverage

Protects your business for claims that occur off the road, such as injuries or property damage at loading docks or customer locations.

FMCSA Federal Filings (Interstate Authority)

For carriers operating under their own federal authority, the following filings are required:

  • MCS-90 Endorsement – Proof of financial responsibility

  • BMC-91 or BMC-91X – Auto liability filing submitted to FMCSA

These filings are required before authority becomes active.

State-Specific Trucking Filings

(Required primarily for intrastate operations and vary by state)

We assist with compliance review and filings when required in the following states:

Texas (TX)

  • Form E – Proof of auto liability

  • Form H – Cargo filing (if required for intrastate operations)

Tennessee (TN)

  • No routine filing for most intrastate carriers

  • State registration and proof of insurance may be required depending on operation

Ohio (OH)

  • No standard Form E requirement

  • Compliance depends on vehicle type and intrastate authority

Arizona (AZ)

  • Intrastate carriers may require Form E

  • State registration with ADOT may be required

Colorado (CO)

  • Intrastate carriers may require Form E

  • State compliance reviewed based on operation type

Washington (WA)

  • Filing may be required through Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission

  • Proof of insurance required for intrastate carriers

South Carolina (SC)

  • Form E required for certain intrastate motor carriers

Indiana (IN)

  • Intrastate carriers may require Form E depending on operation

Michigan (MI)

  • No routine Form E for most carriers

  • Proof of insurance required for intrastate registration

Georgia (GA)

  • Form E required for intrastate motor carriers

  • Form F may apply depending on authority

Nevada (NV)

  • Form E required for intrastate operations

  • Filing submitted to Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA)

Not all trucking operations require state filings. Filing requirements depend on whether you operate interstate or intrastate, vehicle weight, cargo type, and authority status.

How Commercial Truck Insurance Works

We review your operation, including:

  • Truck or box truck type

  • Operating radius (local, regional, interstate)

  • Cargo hauled

  • Authority status (own authority or leased on)

  • States of operation

We then shop multiple trucking insurance carriers to find coverage that meets compliance requirements. If filings are required, we assist with submission once the policy is bound.
